Marks Guide: Gear Stars & Upgrades
Learn how Azeroth Survivors marks work, where to spend them in the Armory, which gear stars to prioritize, and how to farm more without wasting runs.
What Are Azeroth Survivors Marks?
Azeroth Survivors marks are the long-term currency that turns a lucky gear drop into a permanent stat gain. If you clear Heroics but ignore the Armory, you are leaving power on the table because marks pay for equipment star upgrades that carry across runs. Treat Azeroth Survivors marks as a separate budget from gold, talent points, and achievements, and your upgrade path becomes much easier to plan.
Azeroth Survivors marks are not spendable during a run. They live in the Armory, displayed beside a class name, and they pay for permanent equipment star upgrades. Gold is the in-run currency used for caches and other run costs. Talent experience unlocks permanent talent points for a class. Hunter's Mark is a combat ability, not currency. Account achievement points buy eligible reward perks and unlocks. Keeping these resources separate prevents costly mistakes.
| Resource | What it does | Where to check |
|---|---|---|
| Marks | Pays for permanent equipment star upgrades | Armory, beside the class name |
| Gold | Meets in-run costs such as a cache price | Run interface and cache prompts |
| Talent experience | Earns permanent talent points for a class | Talents |
| Achievement points | Buys eligible reward perks and unlocks | Achievements / Rewards |
| Hunter's Mark | A Hunter combat ability | Spellbook or ability tooltip |
Your Azeroth Survivors marks balance can change when you swap classes because the Armory total is class-specific. Check the class name beside the number before planning an upgrade. A large balance on one hero does not pay for another hero's gear. The number is attached to that class's Armory, not an account-wide wallet.
How to Spend Azeroth Survivors Marks in the Armory
To spend marks on permanent gear, start with the class that actually wears the item. Open that class's Armory, choose a collected piece in Collection, and read the Upgrade panel carefully. The panel should show the allowed star level, the marks price, the benefit added by the next star, and any Heroic requirement. If the star is locked, currency will not bypass the requirement.
| Step | Action | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Select the class and open the Armory | The class name beside the marks total matches the gear you want to improve |
| 2 | Choose a collected piece in Collection | You are viewing the intended item, not only its appearance |
| 3 | Inspect Upgrade | Star level, marks price, next-star bonus, and Heroic requirement |
| 4 | Complete any locked requirement | The named zone and Heroic level must be cleared with that class |
| 5 | Buy the upgrade and equip the piece | Appearance choices alone do not add the item's bonuses |
Unlocking a star level does not buy it. Beating Heroic N in a zone raises the eligible star ceiling for that class's gear from that zone, but the Armory upgrade still costs marks. A Heroic clear on a different class can open a difficulty level without opening the same stars for the class you are currently equipping. Read the requirement on the piece itself, then confirm the class, zone, and Heroic level before you farm.
Do not spend Azeroth Survivors marks just because a piece is sitting in your Collection. Buy upgrades for equipment you use in your chosen build, then compare the next-star bonus with any nearby set threshold. A strong individual bonus and a set-completing piece solve different problems, so decide which problem is holding back your runs.
Which Gear Upgrades Should You Buy First?
Start with pieces you actually wear. If a set bonus is close, count the armor slots and star levels before spending. Head, shoulders, chest, wrists, hands, waist, legs, and feet make the eight armor slots. Weapons and a back-slot item do not replace one of them. A “9/9” collection row can include a weapon, so it is not the same counter as eight qualifying armor pieces worn.
| Equipment goal | Requirement |
|---|---|
| Activate a four-piece set bonus | Wear four armor pieces from that set, each at one star or higher |
| Activate an eight-piece set bonus | Wear all eight armor pieces from that set, each at three stars or higher |
| Empower the eight-piece bonus | Raise all eight armor pieces to five stars |
The empowered set tooltip describes the bonus as half again as strong. That does not mean every individual equipment stat increases by that amount. Read the specific set effect and its star progress in the Armory. If the bonus does not match the skills you use, the upgrade is not a priority even if the item is part of a set.
Match the set to your build. A Volley bonus is a reason to consider Dragonstalker for a Volley-focused Hunter, but only after you compare the relevant skill choices and read the set tooltip. Write down the effect you want, the missing armor pieces, and the star level each required piece must reach. That short list keeps you from scattering marks across pieces that never complete a useful threshold.
How to Earn More Azeroth Survivors Marks
Playing runs and defeating bosses earns marks. Both Normal and Heroic difficulty descriptions display a marks multiplier, and Heroic increases rewards while making enemies harder. The practical question is not which multiplier looks biggest; it is which run you can finish repeatedly without burning more time on failed attempts.
| Farming goal | Better action |
|---|---|
| Unlock a needed star | Run the relevant zone and Heroic level with the class that owns the equipment |
| Spend currency efficiently | Compare a difficulty you finish consistently with the harder alternative |
| A higher difficulty stalls at a boss | Compare a build with more sustained single-target damage or recovery |
| You are missing an item | Select it in Collection and read “Drops from,” or inspect “Still to find in your zones” |
| Your balance is low | Track marks earned and total time, including failed attempts |
A missing item and a low balance are different farming goals. For a missing piece, follow the drop location shown for that item. For an upgrade unlock, follow the set's named zones and class requirement. When two eligible zones serve the same goal, compare the one you finish more reliably before choosing the harder route.
There is no universal best marks-farming class or map. Pick a class and zone you clear consistently, then compare actual marks earned against total time. The difficulty picker shows your multiplier; repeated runs show whether the extra reward is worth the extra risk for your setup.
Talent points and spend gates are earned separately from marks. A class can have talent points available while its gear stars remain locked, and the reverse is also true. Use the talent points and spend gates reference when a build feels weak but your Armory upgrades look correct. For the exact Armory flow and star requirements, keep the marks and permanent gear upgrade steps handy during a shopping session.
Why Can't I Upgrade My Gear?
Most failed upgrades come down to one missing requirement, not a bug. Check the class, zone, Heroic level, star ceiling, and equipped status before you assume the Armory is broken.
| What you see | What to check |
|---|---|
| You have marks, but the star is locked | Read the required class, zones, and Heroic level on that piece or set |
| The displayed balance is lower after changing class | Check the class name beside the Armory marks total |
| A collected piece adds no stats | Equip it as gear; showing it as an appearance is a separate action |
| A set bonus is still inactive | Count matching armor pieces actually worn and check every piece's required star level |
| You cannot find a price for another star | Check whether the piece is fully upgraded or whether the next star is still locked |
If the star requirement is met and the price is visible, purchase the upgrade and confirm the item is equipped. If the set bonus still does not activate, recount the eight armor slots and verify each piece's star level. A weapon in the collection row does not fill an armor slot, and a high collection count can hide that mismatch.
FAQ
Do Azeroth Survivors marks carry between classes? No. The Armory displays a class-specific balance beside the class name. Check that total when you change heroes, and do not plan an upgrade using another class's displayed marks.
Are marks the same as gold? No. Gold meets in-run costs such as a cache's displayed price. Marks pay for permanent equipment star upgrades in the Armory.
How do I earn marks faster? Play runs and defeat bosses, then compare difficulties you can finish consistently. Heroic raises the marks multiplier but also makes enemies harder, so track marks earned and total time rather than chasing the largest multiplier.
Does a Heroic clear automatically upgrade my gear? No. A Heroic clear can raise the eligible star ceiling for that class's gear from a zone, but the Armory still charges marks for the upgrade. A clear on another class may open a difficulty without opening the same stars for the class you are equipping.
