Addons Guide: Install & Best Picks
Learn how to install Azeroth Survivors addons on desktop and in the browser, pick a meter or UI pack, and fix out-of-date addon errors fast.
Why Bother With Addons at All
A rough run is usually a visibility problem. You don't know which spell is carrying your damage, your HUD is buried under level-up cards, and your build is guesswork. Azeroth Survivors addons fix most of that, and the good news is you don't need a mod manager or a CurseForge account — the game reads WoW 1.12-style addons straight from a folder or a .zip, so setup takes a couple of minutes.
This guide walks through installing Azeroth Survivors addons on desktop and in the browser, which ones deserve a slot, how the built-in damage meter fits in, and what to do when a patch breaks something.
Install Azeroth Survivors Addons: Desktop vs. Browser
There are two install paths, and they behave differently. On Windows and Linux you drop a folder next to the game. In the browser you hand the game a .zip and it does the unpacking.
| Step | Desktop (Windows / Linux) | Browser edition |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Open Options → AddOns → Open AddOns Folder | Open Options → AddOns → Install AddOns |
| 2 | Unzip the addon into that folder | Select one or more addon .zip files |
| 3 | Make sure the path ends in AddOns/AddonName/AddonName.toc, with the folder named like the .toc | Release zips and GitHub "Download ZIP" files both work; the game finds the folder by its .toc |
| 4 | Restart the game so it loads on the next run | Check it is switched on in the list; it loads on the next run |
The folder structure trips up more people than anything else. GitHub's "Download ZIP" appends -main to the folder name, so rename it to match the .toc — or, if the archive has a folder inside it (nfUI does), copy that inner folder instead of the wrapper. Prefer doing it yourself? The AddOns folder sits beside the game's executable if you'd rather open it directly from your file manager.
Two things to internalize: addons load only at the start of a run, and the on/off list is global — every hero shares it, so you never have to re-enable anything when you swap classes.
In the browser, updates are just installs. Grab the new .zip, install it through Options → AddOns → Install AddOns, and it replaces the addon of the same name. Browser addons live in that browser's storage, so they don't follow you to another device and they disappear if you clear the site's data.
One safety note that matters if you're the cautious type: addon zips are plain text — .toc and .lua files, sometimes .blp or .tga textures — and they run inside the game's own Lua environment. Some desktop releases also ship an optional native helper, such as avrt.dll for pre-launch auto-updating in SurvivorsDragonUi. That helper is optional, runs outside the game, and cannot work in the browser edition, so browser players should install the intact zip and skip it.
Which Addons Are Worth a Slot
The scene is small and community-driven: authors post their work through the official Discord and publish downloads on their own GitHub pages. Beyond meters and UI overhauls, you'll see build overlays that list the spells and jewelry a class wants, death recaps so you can see what one-shot you, and loot trackers.
| Addon | Type | What stands out | Browser support |
|---|---|---|---|
| AZS Spell Meter | Per-spell damage meter | Adjustable DPS window (10 seconds by default, 5 seconds to 2 minutes), kills per spell, procs credited to the spell that cast them, sortable columns, five views | Not documented by the author |
| SurvivorsDragonUi | Full HUD replacement | DPS meter included but off by default; 1–10 rows; damage, healing, boss and party headings | Yes, per the author |
| nfUI | UI package | Ships as a nested folder, so desktop users copy the inner nfUI folder | Standard zip install |
| Community projects | Build overlays, death recaps, loot trackers | Vary by author and update cadence | Varies |
AZS Spell Meter is the pick if you want to know where your damage actually comes from. Its default window measures DPS over the last 10 seconds, which you can stretch out to two minutes, and it shows kills per spell alongside procs on the spell that fired them. Its five views cover Damage, Healing, Boss, Taken and Party — Party only in co-op. While its windows are open, the game's built-in Damage Done meter hides, so you're not reading two copies of the same numbers. The latest noted build, v1.31 (October 24, 2026), declares the standard 11200 interface.
SurvivorsDragonUi goes the other direction: a complete HUD replacement with a meter tucked inside it. Turn it on through its own menu: Damage meter → Enable damage meter → Confirm. From there, Layout handles moving, scaling and hiding, and the meter heading cycles through damage, healing, boss and party rows with anywhere from 1 to 10 lines. It ships frequent rolling builds in the 3.2.x series.
Reality check before you install anything: Azeroth Survivors runs a WoW 1.12.1-style client (## Interface: 11200), so old vanilla addons technically load but almost never understand a survivors run. And because the game patches often, treat compatibility on the newest patch as something to confirm on your first run — if an addon misbehaves after an update, the fix is usually a fresh release from the author.
Turn On the Built-In Damage Meter First
Before you install a single addon, use what's already there. The game has its own damage meter — no addon required — and it's one checkbox away.
- Open Options and enable Show Damage Meter. A meter window and a minimap button appear.
- Click the button to open the live breakdown.
- Leave Damage Meter on Top on if you want the window to float above level-up and jewelry cards while you're picking.
- Adjust HUD Scale if the meter crowds your screen; it resizes the whole run HUD.
| View | What you're reading |
|---|---|
| Damage Done | Per-source damage across the run |
| Healing Done | Healing output |
| Boss Damage | Damage dealt to bosses |
| Party DPS | Group output in co-op |
The practical use is build testing: run the same zone twice with different picks and compare total damage at the same minute mark. If you want that data split per spell, that's exactly the gap addons fill — the game exposes those numbers to addon authors through calls like AZS_GetMeter(), so meter addons read the same figures you see in the stock window.
Fixing the Most Common Addon Problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Addon doesn't appear in the list | Folder nested one level too deep, or the folder name doesn't match the .toc | Rebuild the path as AddOns/AddonName/AddonName.toc |
| Flagged Out of date and skipped | The .toc targets a different interface version | Update from the author's page; Load out of date AddOns forces it to load, but it may not work |
| Loaded in the list, no visible window | The meter or frame is hidden in the addon's own settings | Open its options and check visibility, scale and position |
| Worked yesterday, broken today | The game updated and the addon fell behind | Turn it off and wait for a new release |
| Addon vanished in the browser | Site data was cleared, or you switched browsers | Reinstall the .zip in that browser |
| Different hero, missing addon | You forgot the list is shared | Check the box in Options → AddOns |
That "out of date" toggle deserves a word of caution. Since the game can update several times a day, addons occasionally fall behind the current interface. Forcing old ones to load is a short-term workaround, not a fix — if the addon acts strangely, switch it off and stick with the authors who publish frequent builds.
Writing Your Own Azeroth Survivors AddOns
If you've written WoW 1.12 addons before, you already know the shape of this: Lua and XML, with ## Interface: 11200 in the .toc. What's different is the API the game adds for run data.
| Function | Returns |
|---|---|
AZS_GetMeter() | Damage meter lines (name, damage, DPS, share, proc) plus run totals |
AZS_GetHealing() | Healing lines, overhealing excluded |
AZS_GetBossMeter() | The last boss fight's meter; empty before the first boss |
AZS_GetRunTime() | Elapsed run time |
AZS_GetUpcomingBosses() | Bosses still ahead of you |
AZS_GetGuardians() | Guardian data |
AZS_GetPhase() | Current run phase — check it before reading run data |
AZS_SetHudShown() | Hide parts of the stock HUD |
AZS_SetStoringLevels() / AZS_OpenStoredLevels() | Mirror the Store Level-Ups setting |
Write for 1.12 conventions (this, event, arg1, table.getn), and match bosses by name since there are no GUIDs. Nothing in the API changes damage, health, gold or loot — the functions report the run and toggle things the game's own settings already control, so your addon can't turn into a balance cheat.
FAQ
Do I need Azeroth Survivors addons to see my DPS? No. The game ships a damage meter: enable Show Damage Meter in Options and you get Damage Done, Healing Done, Boss Damage and Party DPS views. Addons are for extra detail, like per-spell breakdowns.
Do Azeroth Survivors addons work in the browser?
Yes. Open Options → AddOns → Install AddOns and pick the .zip — a GitHub "Download ZIP" works as-is. Keep in mind browser addons are stored in that browser only and disappear if you clear the site's data.
Can I use normal WoW Classic addons? They may load, since the client follows the 1.12 format, but most were written for a real MMO and won't make sense in a survivors run. Stick with addons built for this game.
Do Azeroth Survivors addons change difficulty? Nothing in the documented API touches damage, health, gold or loot. The available functions report run data and reproduce existing settings such as hiding HUD elements or toggling Store Level-Ups.
